YAR404 History of Architecture

This course offers a picture of how architecture evolved from the prehistoric era to the 20^th century, with references to the historical and social environment. It tries to identify the ideas that determined the solutions to problems of organising constructed space.

The classical foundations of architecture are examined (Greek, Hellenistic and Roman architecture), Romanesque and Gothic architecture, Renaissance architecture, Baroque, 19^th-century architecture (classicism, historicism, eclecticism) and early modernism.  From the 20^th century, the Vienna School, Bauhaus and Esprit Nouveau are introduced.  Reference is also made to selected examples of settlements, monuments and buildings.
