The course approaches the history of the Middle East from pre-Islamic times to the establishment of Ottoman sovereignty. It discusses historiographical problems and studies the development of Islamic society in the Arab world, emphasizing the pluralism of the cultures that exist in the region. Specific issues to be discussed are the institutional and intellectual structures of Muslims, political institutions, culture, war and conquest, movement and trade.
