EAR804 Byzantine Monumental Painting And Mosaics

The purpose of the course is to present the monumental religious painting art and the art of Byzantine mosaics, with secular and religious content. It analyzes both the stylistic aspect of art and its symbolic and theological character.

We follow the artistic production (monumental painting and mosaics) with its stylistic peculiarities per periods (1. Early Christian art and Early Byzantine period, 4th-7th century, 2. Iconoclasm and middle-Byzantine art, 8th-12th century, 3. Palaeologean period and late Byzantine art (13th-15th centuries).
